Chapter Twelve

Abraham laid his napkin on the table and stood, squeezing my shoulder on the way to the door. I laid my fork down, intuitively knowing that our quiet breakfast was over and I was about to be mired in the pain I knew this day would inevitably bring.

I turned as Abraham pulled the door open to two men dressed in suits. Before Abraham could speak, the man on the left did.

“Are you Abraham Von Sallage?”

“I am. May I ask who you are?” Abraham answered in a voice icier than I’ve ever heard.

“I’m Detective John Goins and this is my partner Tony Gatto,” he explained, motioning at the man next to him. “We would like to speak with you and Miss Darling regarding her brother.”

Abraham held onto the doorknob, but turned back to me, raising one brow. I nodded my resigned approval and he turned back to the men. “Do you have ID?”

“Of course,” they said in unison, flipping open their badges to show him.

“FBI? Why FBI for a simple hit and run?” Abraham asked.

I stood and Abraham was at my side before I saw him move, holding my elbow.

Both men stepped in and Goins closed the door. “We’ll be happy to explain during the interview.”

“Okay, can I get you some coffee first?” he asked, ever the polite host, but both men declined.

Detective Goins was the first to speak. “I apologize for coming by so early, but I’m sure you both understand how important it is for us to investigate the accident quickly, while evidence can still be collected.”

I nodded again, biting my lower lip to keep from sighing, or vomiting, I wasn’t sure which. The idea of talking about Davis as part of an investigation was harder than I thought it would be. I wanted to hide away and pretend none of this was happening, but I knew I had to be strong, especially if it meant catching the person, or persons, responsible for his death.

I motioned towards the sofa and loveseat. “Do you mind if we sit?”

Detective Gatto smiled easily. “That would be great, thank you.”

They both sat on the sofa, leaving the loveseat open for Abraham and me. I sat and faced the men, glad when Abraham sat close to me, his arm around me in a protective manner.

Detective Goins held up a small tape recorder. “Do we have your permission to record your interview? We could record your answers in writing, but I find that stems the flow of the conversation sometimes. Saying no doesn’t indicate any unwillingness to cooperate. Whatever you’re comfortable with is fine.”

“You can record it. I have nothing to hide,” I informed them.

Goins turned on the recorder and laid it on the walnut coffee table. “To start I’ll have you state your name and your relationship to the deceased, Mr. Davis Darling.”

I cleared my throat, willing my voice to stay steady when I spoke. “My name is Eve Eleanor Darling and I was Davis’s half-sister and guardian.”

Abraham squeezed my hand, which he
